How to De-Ice Your Windshield Quickly

How to de-ice your windshield quickly

Winters in Kentucky can be icy, and when you’re in a hurry a frozen windshield can really hold you up. Learn how to de-ice your windshield quickly so you can be on your way with a clear field of vision.

Use a de-icer spray

You can buy a de-icer spray at your local car parts store or at many big box stores. The solution is designed to melt the ice quickly so you can remove it with a scraper or with your windshield wipers. In a pinch, you can also use a solution of two parts 70% isopropyl alcohol and one part water. Mix together in a spray bottle and apply it to your windshield to melt the ice fast.

Turn on your car before you need to leave

Windshield ice will start to melt once your car starts to heat up. Rather than waiting until you have to leave to start your car, start it a few minutes early and turn on the interior heat to the highest setting. Choose the “defrost” setting for your front and rear windshields to ensure the warm air is aimed in the right direction.

Use a scraper

Once the ice starts to melt from the de-icer spray or the heat from your car’s interior (or both), it should come off quickly with a scraper. Once it’s completely removed from your windshield you can be on your way with no visual obstructions.
