Fall Driving Dangers & Safety Tips in Kentucky

Fall Driving Dangers & Safety Tips in Kentucky | Elizabethtown, KY

The most beautiful season of the year is here again in Elizabethtown, but that also means slick roads and driving hazards. The roads in Kentucky can be dangerous during the autumn season, so we at Hardin County Honda want to make sure you’re safe on the road. We advise all drivers near Elizabethtown to follow these fall driving tips during these months.

Don’t slam on the brakes

The roads are extra slick in Kentucky during the fall due to the increase in rain and the dead leaves strewn across the pavement. It’s harder for car tires to maintain traction on the road when it’s covered in wet leaves, so do your best to coast when decelerating and give yourself plenty of distance to come to a stop — rather than slamming on the brakes and potentially losing control.

Watch for deer

Statistically, this is the time of year when you’re more likely to see deer wandering into the roads looking for mates. Be on guard by keeping a close eye on the sides of the road, especially during dawn and dusk. The earlier you notice a deer, the less likely you’ll need to slam on your brakes.

Use your lights

We’re getting closer and closer to the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. Each passing day has less and less sunlight, so make sure you use your car’s headlights — and that they’re not dim. You should activate the headlights even during the day when it’s rainy or cloudy out so other oncoming cars can see you.

To prepare your vehicle for fall in Kentucky, make sure its tires have traction, the brakes work, the headlights are bright, and the windshield wipers don’t leave streaks. Schedule a maintenance appointment at the Hardin County Honda service center to help ensure that your autumn drives are as fun as they are safe.
